Issue #35: "Seaside Serenade"
The temps are mild, but the skating is smooth this season at the Newport Skating Center! Come on down to the best winter recreation on the island or enjoy the sparkly winter nightlife before the frost really sets in! With tiny white lights strung all around and cozy eateries abounding, the Newport Skating Center is the perfect place to take in the clear fresh air then find a comfy spot to warm your toes and tummy. It's wintertime fun for children and adults alike, friends and family, even "special someones!" So grab your skates (or rent a pair here) and come have a ball--we hope to see you soon!
On January 7th, the Newport Skating Center hosted Give Back Day, a full day of seasonal fun and goodwill to benefit our local and regional community. In the balmy winter sun we held our annual blood drive to benefit the Rhode Island Blood Center, collecting a total of 11 pints of blood--enough to help 33 patients in need. Thank you to everyone who participated in this event--you gave a life-saving gift! We also had a big push for our ongoing annual Amica Coat Drive, with more than 30 coats collected on this Saturday alone to help keep our neighbors warm this winter. Our Special Olympics fundraiser continued with the Newport Yachting Center matching every dollar donated to this heart-warming community cause. The Special Olympics Rhode Island program provides over 1,400 year-round sports training and athletic competitions for more than 2,700 athletes and hosting over 40 local, regional, and statewide tournaments and competitions each year in 25 official and demonstration sports. Thank you to each and every one of you who found it in your heart to help out however you could on this spirited day of warm winter cheer and gracious generosity!
Don't forget to mark your calendars for special weeknight ticket prices! Start it off right on Monday nights, with free entry to the Newport Skating Center courtesy of People's Credit Union. On Tuesday nights it's 2-for-1 admission when you show your Stop & Shop card. On Wednesday nights skating admissions are free thanks to our friends at Cox Communications! On Thursday nights, gather up the kids for a frosty frolic at Amica Family Fun Night, featuring $2 discounted admission and a free hot chocolate for the whole family. So find the night that's right for you and come enjoy an evening on the ice amongst Newport's glittery waterfront winterscape!
Let your romantic side shine this winter with a different kind of evening out for two. Enjoy a downtown fireside dinner overlooking the water at The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar or 22 Bowen's Wine Bar & Grille. Take a rambling stroll through the shops and boutiques of Newport's historic cobblestone streets, stopping for a warming drink or maybe a sweetened treat. Then top it all off with a romantic skate on our gleaming, glide-away ice--perfect for couples on Friday nights between 9:30 and 11pm, when the rink is open only to adults. Make an ordinary date extraordinary, and don't forget: Valentine's Day is just around the corner!
Be sure to check out the Skating Lesson Programs offered at the Newport Skating Center all season long! Offered by our partner, the Island Skating Academy, these 7-week-long programs will give adults and kids alike that extra guidance to get you gliding across the ice in no time! All classes include a half-hour of professional instruction, free practice time and a hot chocolate or coffee. Day classes are available for Home School groups, and don't miss the February Vacation Skate Camp! Skate rentals are available through the Newport Skating Center for those who just want to "test the water," so come on out and try the ice. It's never been easier! For more information visit skatenewport.com or contact Meghan Lamarre, Director of Island Skating Academy, at Meg@IslandSkatingAcademy.com.
Seeking a new look for this winter? Kids outgrown last season's winter wear? We could use those coats! Bring your new or gently-used coats down to the Newport Skating Center for the annual Amica Coat Drive, running now through January 29th. All coats are donated to St. Joseph's Soup Kitchen to help keep our neighbors in need extra warm on these chilly winter days--everyone who donates receives a 2-for-1 admission pass to the Newport Skating Center for anytime this season! So clear out those closets and consider a donation to this warming winter cause!
