Newport Yachting Center opening up more waterfront space at concerts for guests to enjoy the summer and the views of Newport Harbor.

NEWPORT, RI, June 19, 2012 -- The Newport Yachting Center event venue and marina announces that multi-Grammy award winner, “Ziggy Marley – Wild & Free Tour”, will be kicking off the 15th Annual Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series next Friday, June 29th. Tickets are still available at $42 for standard seating or $62 for preferred seating and can be purchased by visiting www.newportwaterfrontevents.com or by calling the Newport Yachting Center Box Office at (401) 846-1600.

“Ziggy Marley will quickly create a reggae party atmosphere along the Newport waterfront with his dynamic stage presence and contagious reggae beats,” said Michele Maker Palmieri, General Manager of the Newport Yachting Center. “This concert date falls on the final weekend of the America’s Cup World Series so we’re doing our best to add to the excitement and make the most of the fun. In fact, to keep the reggae vibes going throughout the weekend, we’re offering a free newportFILM outdoor screening of MARLEY – THE DEFINITIVE STORY, of which Ziggy Marley has a major on-screen role and served as executive producer.” Palmieri added that if the Ziggy Marley concert- and film-goers are still hungry for more reggae music, they should save the date of Saturday, August 11th to enjoy a full day and night of jammin at the Third Annual Newport Waterfront Reggae Festival at the Newport Yachting Center.

Born in 1968 in Trenchtown, Jamaica, Ziggy Marley is the eldest son of reggae legend, Bob Marley. He began his musical career in 1979 playing with his father and his siblings on “Children Playing in the Streets” and has gone on to win five Grammy awards, first with his brothers and sisters in the band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers and then as a solo artist. Last year, Marley marked his thirty-year career with a release of his first graphic novel, MarijuanaMan and his album, Wild and Free, on his self-owned record label, Tuff Gong Worldwide.

Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers released their debut album, Play the Game Right, in 1985. After cutting several more albums, the band moved to Virgin records in 1988 and recorded the record Conscious Party which featured the hit songs, “Tomorrow People” and “Tumblin’ Down” and won the group its first Grammy award. They followed that up with five albums in the 1990s, two of which scored Grammy nods, One Bright Day and Fallen is Babylon.

After striking out on his own with the critically-acclaimed Dragonfly in 2003, Marley arrived as a solo artist in 2006 when he won the Grammy for the album, Love Is My Religion. The year 2009 saw Marley win his fifth Grammy award, but his first in the children’s area. Family Time featured appearances by several members of his family as well as notable guests, Jack Johnson, Paul Simon and Willie Nelson. Always socially aware, Marley continues to be active in the Bob Marley Foundation’s causes, including Africa Unite, and created his own Foundation, U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment) in 2007 to help underprivileged children go to school.

The night’s opening act is Huntington Beach-based Headshine and its signature acoustic coastal-rock with a touch of reggae. A fresh California sound and songs about living life to the fullest has spurred the band’s growth, especially in the college market. Recently, Headshine performed live on television at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, received two nominations from the 2012 OC Music Awards and its new song “High On Life” was featured by Surfline/Billabong in a video with US Open Surf Champ, Brett Simpson. With the backing of major-label producer, Jim Perkins, Headshine recently premiered its single, “Better Things”.

Getting the evening of music started on the more intimate Courtyard Stage will be Block Island’s Glenda Luck whose 1960s Wurlitzer and guitar accompaniments range from playful and lighthearted to moody and brooding. She is due to release her second album, entitled Manisses, this August.

To further enhance the Sunset Music Series experience, there will now be more access to the spectacular Newport Harbor views at “The Point” which is located dockside with waterfront lounge areas and an expanded bar. In addition, the Julians OmniBus will operate on-site concessions during the concerts. This double-decker food bus, originally from London, has a fully operational kitchen, seating on the top floor, and offers a grab & go dining experience like no other on the waterfront. The array of choices include Pulled Pork Tacos, Killer Grilled Cheese, Cod Fritters, Falafel Wraps and other offerings from comfort food to healthy options plus nightly specials.
