The Sovereign Bank Family Skating Center is getting ready to open for the season!
WHAT:
Warm up to winter, if only because it is the perfect time to experience out-door ice-skating in the heart of Newport! Located just steps from the most decorated downtown shops and restaurants, this harbor-side skate center boasts free parking, a warming hut, skate rentals and a host of other on-site amenities. Not only is it the best spot to glove up and glide with your favorite family member or significant other, but there are special events happening at the rink on a weekly basis that are sure to get your heart pumping. With charity benefits, weekly discounted specials and other goodies, there is no excuse not to brace for the weather and embrace the open-air community center that is the rink. Enjoy seasonal fun with minimal funds. Even the Grinch would agree that everything’s twice as nice on the ice!
The Sovereign Bank Family Skating Center announces the following key calendar dates:
Tuesday, December 8th at 5:00 p.m.
Skating Center Season Opens (weather depending)
Friday, December 11th, 5:45 p.m.
Annual Tree Lighting & Grand Opening
Kick-off the skating season while visiting with Santa, listening to carolers, and enjoying complimentary goodies! Skaters of all ages are welcome to attend. There will be a skating session from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. following the festivities. See you on the ice!
Tuesday, January 5th
Learn to Skate, Newport Style!
Led by our trained professional instructors, this six-week program begins in early January (total of six 45 minute lessons) and will be sure to sharpen the skating skills of children and adults alike, at both beginner and intermediate levels (children must be at least 4 years old to join in). Children’s classes are available on Tuesdays from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m. and Saturdays from either 8:30 – 9:15 a.m. or 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Adult and teenage lessons are on Tuesdays from 7:30 – 8:15 p.m.
WHEN: Skating sessions will take place Monday – Thursday 5:00 – 9:30 p.m. Friday sessions are from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m., 6:30 - 9:30 p.m., with an Adult Skate session from 9:30 – 11:00 p.m. Weekend hours on Saturday and Sunday are 11:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. with an Adult Skate from 9:30 – 11:00 p.m. on Saturday. Extended School Vacation and Holiday Schedule hours will run from December 24th to January 3rd, as well as between February 13th – 21st. WHERE: On the waterfront at the Newport Yachting Center, at the corner of Commercial Wharf and America’s Cup Avenue, in scenic downtown Newport, Rhode Island.
ADMISSION: Admission to the Sovereign Bank Family Skating Center is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and children between 3-11 years of age. However, there are nightly specials, including Free Skate Nights on Mondays, courtesy of Sovereign Bank, and Wednesdays, courtesy of Cox Communications, and Stop & Shop Night on Tuesdays when admission is 2-for-1 with your Stop & Shop card.
