To broaden involvement this year, Show organizers have announced the introduction of new divisions under each of the main award categories. In both the Best New Sailboat and Best New Powerboat categories, selections will be divided by boats under 30 feet and those 30 feet and over. In the Best New Boating Product category, separate divisions have been established for Operational Products, such as engines and navigation devices, and Non-Operational Products, such as lighting and safety equipment. Divisional winners will be recognized and one main winner in each category will be announced.
In the past, as many as sixty products being launched at the Show have taken part in the judging. In 2008, the Sea Spirit Passagemaker 60 motoryacht, the Santa Cruz 37 crossover sailboat and the Paraloc Rigging Line all took first honors in the competition. To be eligible, the boat or product must have been introduced between April and September prior to the Show and make its official debut at Newport. Foreign boats may have been launched earlier but will be making their U.S. debut in Newport.
Newport For New Products spotlights the new boats and boating product that make the most significant contribution to the experience of recreational boating. The program recognizes the Newport show’s unique place as the first United States boat show of the new model year. Judging is done by an independent panel of boating experts and awards are given based on innovation, value to the consumer and aesthetics.
