NEWPORT, RI, July 28, 2009 -- The Newport Yachting Center continues this summer's 12th Annual Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series during the first full week of August when Guster will be appearing on Friday, August 7th. Guster’s special guest will be Fairhaven while Pete Vendettuoli will take the smaller Courtyard Stage. Tickets to the show are $35 for preferred seating and $25 for standard seating and are available through the Newport Yachting Center’s convenient ClicknPrint ticketing system at www.newportwaterfrontevents.com which offers the benefit of selecting your own seat and “at home” ticket printing. Those interested in tickets can also visit the Newport Yachting Center Box Office on 4 Commercial Wharf (off America’s Cup Avenue) in downtown Newport or call at (401) 846-1600, Ext. 2. The Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series supports The Autism Project of Rhode Island which will organize a raffle at the show of Red Sox tickets and leather recliners courtesy of Cardi’s Furniture.
Forming after a chance meeting between three Tufts University undergrads in the early 1990s, Guster is known for its soaring harmonies, inventive guitar riffs and a hardcore following due in part to their energetic live shows. The band has topped the British and German billboards, sold out New York’s fabled Radio City Music Hall, performed with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall and founded the eco-friendly Campus Consciousness Tour, with buses powered by bio-diesel and performances powered by wind power.
Guster’s fifth and most recent studio release, Ganging Up on the Sun, won “Album of the Year” at the Boston Music Awards in 2006 and peaked at 25 on the Billboard 200. The band stayed “underground” for its first two albums, Parachute (1994) and Goldfly (1997), but broke into the musical mainstream in 1999 with its third studio album, Lost and Gone Forever, with the single song “Fa Fa,” which made it onto the Adult Top 40. The band then enjoyed success on the charts with Keep It Together, its fourth album, with two singles in the Adult Top 40 (“Careful” and “Amsterdam”). Guster's music has also been featured on numerous movies and television shows, including Disturbia, Wedding Crashers and The OC.
In 2009, in addition to touring, Guster is taking part in an event with musician John Mayer called Mayercraft Carrier 2 aboard the Carnival Splendor. Guster will also be releasing its 6 th studio album this year.
“From the day we announced our headliners this spring, Guster has been our best selling show due in large part to their grassroots appeal,” said Michele Maker Palmieri, General Manager of the Newport Yachting Center. “We expect a similar concert experience to 2005 when they played our venue and enjoyed an audience full of enthusiastic fans from around the region. Guster really delivers the jams, and with the setting of the downtown Newport waterfront it has all the makings of a perfect summer show!”
The special guest of the evening is one of the premier modern alternative rock bands in New England the winner of the 2009 WBRU Rock Hunt, Fairhaven. Combining intricate, melodic vocals with driving piano and guitar, they’ve gained a reputation for their energetic live shows. Chris Conti, Music Editor for the Providence Phoenix, adds, “…when you catch Fairhaven’s live show…Connell’s falsetto sweeps atop Gould’s piano as they sink their big hooks in.” The band’s release of their first full-length album is due in October 2009. Local singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Pete Vendettuoli, will grace the Courtyard Stage.
